Fellows 2008

Yannick Veyrenche (Lyon, France): Februar 2008

Timothy J. Johnson (St. Augustine, Florida USA): Mai/Juni 2008

„In the Letter to an Unknown Master, Bonaventure proposes a hermeneutical of institution accommodation whereby the validity of the Franciscan Order is verifiable inasmuch as it conforms to the historical pattern of the Church. While in Eichstätt, I would like to examine Bonaventure’s sermons on the saints in comparison to those on Francis of Assisi, and then contrast this institutional construction of the Poverello with Roger Bacon’s critique of Minorite pastoral education and preaching.”

Ulrich Lehner (Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA): Juni 2008

“The purpose of my book-project, Enlightenend Monks: The Benedictines of Southern Germany, is to give a revisionist account of the achievements of Benedictine Monastic Enlightenment in Bavaria and Austria between 1750-1800, a field of study that has been called one of the most promising for 18th Century research. My study investigates what social, cultural, philosophical and theological challenges the Southern German abbeys (especially Bavaria and Austria, but also Baden and Würtemberg) had to face between 1750 and 1800 and how they dealt with them. This includes the reception of the philosophies of Locke, Leibniz, Wolff, Kant and Fichte and their implementation into Benedictine theology, as well as the change in mentality within the 18th Century. My archival research shows that a new self-understanding of monks gradually emerged which enabled them to articulate their dissatisfaction with monastic life or bad treatment. During my tenure as fellow of the FOVOG I want to pursue my archival studies on monastic discipline.”

Loris Sturlese (Lecce, Italy): Juli 2008

Forschungsziel bzw.

Steven Vanderputten (Gent, Belgium): Juli/August 2008

“My research is mainly concerned with the socio-political and communicative strategies of Benedictine communities from Northern France and the Southern Low Countries during the high medieval period. The focus of my work during this fellowship will be on the topics of conflict management, ritual and performance and the estrangement from the past.”

Noëlle-Laetitia Perret (Rom/Fribourg, Italy/Switzerland): August/September 2008
